Green Patrol

The environmental awareness patrol was created in 2003; during its first year its goal was to make the public more aware of using outdoor tap water wisely.

Over the years, new mandates have been added. In 2009, the patrol includes two teams with distinct mandates:

  • Waste education for citizens, at home and in public places, as well as for municipal employees; and greenhouse gas reductions and offsets;
  • Environmental conservation, the proper use of pesticides and education about alternative approaches, ecological lawn maintenance, shoreline protection and landscaping.

This year, the patrol features two coordinators, and eight patrollers – all students who are motivated and convinced of the importance of their mission.

The team uses a proactive, dynamic and targeted approach: the patrollers criss-cross residential streets, talking with citizens, meeting owners and apartment dwellers, visiting schools and daycares, and so on. The patrollers work during the day, in the evening and on weekends.
